Grandma’s Hot Milk Cake Recipe

Filed under: Grandma's Recipes — kthomas at 1:36 am on Saturday, August 27, 2005

This simple hot milk cake recipe is a kid pleasing favorite. I love the easy to make topping.

Ingredients:

1 cup of milk (Grandma used whole milk, but we use 2%)
1 stick of butter
2 cups of sugar
4 eggs
2 cups of sifted flour
3 teaspoons of baking powder
dash of salt
1 teaspoon of vanilla

Topping:
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
1/2 cup of sugar

Directions:

1. Put milk and butter into a pan and cook on low heat until the butter melts.
2. Blend eggs and sugar well. (I beat them with a mixer at high speed.)
3. Add flour and the hot milk mixture gradually.
4. Add salt and vanilla.
5. Add baking powder and stir slowly or beat at low speed with mixer.
6. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes.
7. While cake is cooling, mix together cinnamon and sugar.
8. Sprinkle topping evenly over your cake.

This is very similar to the “Lazy Daisy” cake that my Granny made during the 50’s. She topped it while warm with a mixture of brown sugar, a cube of butter, chopped walnuts or pecans, and a little cream. This was brought to a boil, and cooked for a little while, then spread over the warm cake and put under the broiler until it just barely browned. I made this today, on Easter, for my family including my grandchildren. It’s a family tradition.
